I own perhaps 20-25 books on dog training, most following the general prescriptions of Karen Pryor and Grisha Stewart. They are all helpful, but quite complicated and some rather poorly written. This modest book hammers away at a few solid principles; it's reader-and-dog-friendly. I'd venture that, with it in hand, the dimmest human/canine team can make progress. My dog has been given up by 4 wonderful trainers-- including an entire veterinary behavioral medicine faculty-- and 2 vets have marveled that she's not been put down. This is my second purchase. My dog destroyed my first copy. I have a 2 yr. old rescue dog that did not do well over the winter. It was his first winter inside and not in the wild. By January, I was not a happy mom. I purchased this book as my last effort to restore my boy to his former happy self. He was surly, jumpy, attacking my two small cats, knocking me down, dragging me on our walks, chewing everything, snappy at me, pooping in his cage...the list goes on. I have put this book to good use. Two weeks in and he is a new pup. The cats are ecstatic at not having to watch their backs. He snuggles, heels, chews on the appropriate toys, knows where to poop, is calm, listens when I speak, eats better, is happy. This book is well worth every penny is spent! I did not even have to open the other book I bought which was called "Don't dump the dog." I do intend to read it so I do not miss a thing. I will review that one in a few weeks.
